WORLD IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : Lawmakers Voice Support for Aquino
Lawmakers in Manila agreed to support President Corazon Aquino against the military faction seeking to overthrow her government. Aquino, meanwhile, decided against declaring a state of emergency, saying the right-wing dissenters are not strong enough to oust her. The 180-member House of Representatives voted unanimously to cut short this week’s session and return to their districts to drum up support for Aquino. A senior member of the House, who requested anonymity, said that defense officials had met on the security situation and there were fears that “certain factions” within the military might make a preemptive strike.
