Pope John Paul II, in his first public comment on the crisis caused by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, spoke Wednesday of the “danger of war” and offered a prayer for peace.

During his weekly general audience the Pope spoke about the threat to world peace, addressing a small group of Japanese pilgrims.

“Today we add to our prayers the danger of a war that threatens the desired peace in the world,” the Pope said in Japanese. “May the Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, answer our invocations. With this wish, I bless everyone from my heart.”
