P.M. BRIEFING : Whirlpool Plans More Layoffs

FT. SMITH, Ark. — Whirlpool Corp. will lay off more workers sooner than originally planned, it was reported today, the same day some layoffs began.
The company said between 250 to 300 workers are being furloughed today and between 1,500 and 1,600 more will lose their jobs on Sept. 21.
The Benton Harbor, Mich.-based appliance maker, which makes refrigerators at its Ft. Smith plant, had projected earlier this year that about 1,800 employees would be laid off by Oct. 1, the Arkansas Gazette said.
Neal Catlett, president of the Allied Industrial Workers Local 370, which represents workers at the Ft. Smith plant, said the company had indicated that the Middle East crisis would have a rippling effect on the economy.
