DAR ES SALAAM : Another Papal Trek

Share

Pope John Paul II arrives in Tanzania Saturday at the beginning of his seventh visit to Africa and its 80 million Catholics. After also stopping in Burundi and Rwanda, the pontiff will make his most controversial stop in Ivory Coast, where he is to consecrate a cathedral that rivals St. Peter’s in size.

Critics see the $200-million Our Lady of Peace basilica that President Felix Houphouet-Boigny says he built with his own money as a scandalous white elephant in a country where yearly per capita income is $700.
