P.M. BRIEFING : Float Can’t Rain on Wine Parade

From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

A wine festival should be upbeat, say its sponsors, so Mothers Against Drunk Driving can’t parade images of death.

MADD’s display was to have featured car parts, alcohol containers and mounds of dirt topped with headstones for the Sept. 8 parade of the Michigan Wine and Harvest Festival.

The MADD float was turned down for the second straight year because its sobering theme wasn’t consistent with the rest of the parade, Chairman Brian Caplan said.

“I really don’t care if the whole audience at the festival gets drunk,” said Michael Hughes, president of the Kalamazoo County MADD chapter. “I’m worried about when they get behind the wheel.”
