From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Higher gasoline prices hiked West Germany’s inflation rate 0.5 percentage points to about 2.9% in August, the official statistics office said today.

Inflation levels in June and July were 2.4%. The average inflation rate for the first seven months of the year was 2%, the office said.

The statistics office attributed the increase to higher gas prices caused by the continuing crisis in the Persian Gulf that followed the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on Aug. 2.
