Western Aid for Soviet Union

Your editorial is an appeal to the gullible and a soft touch to boot. I can understand Boris Yeltsin calling for volunteers to help bring in the harvest before it rots in the field. Russia had a good harvest this year. Great! Why then is Gorbachev asking for a loan from the West for food purchases?

I suggest that he use his 4 million Red Army to bring the harvest home. Having done that, if the Soviets still need Western money, then they should take it from their Cuban subsidy.

If that still is not enough, then Gorbachev should dip into his space and missile funds. People who don’t have money for food should not go traveling in space anyway.
