Disability Awareness

Share

I am extremely disappointed with the lack of concern on the part of your newspaper for local disability events.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 a.m., Oceanside Civic Center was the start of an 80-mile wheelchair journey to El Cajon, ending Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Challenge Center, with John Enright and company. Enright has received national recognition for his ride across the U.S.A., and plans a trip across Europe and possibly around the world. This was a practice, tune-up run, and an honor for Oceanside to start him off.

The press was notified two weeks in advance, but nary a soul appeared, except a city official with a beautiful send-off and proclamation. Oceanside’s finest escorted John and company to the Carlsbad city limits. He received continued escorts down the coast.

Maybe John’s achievements are too positive to be considered newsworthy, let alone the celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was the purpose of the Marathon Ride.

Good job, John, in advancing awareness about the many abilities of people with special needs.

Next is the education of people to see and respect handicapped parking spaces and accessibility in public recreation areas.
