SHORT TAKES : Wynette Picks a Lively Motel

EVELETH, Minn. — Country music singer Tammy Wynette just happened to spend the night in a motel where police had a standoff with an armed man who barricaded himself in his room for more than five hours.
Customers in nearby rooms were evacuated and there were no injuries, Police Chief James Bozicevich said. The man, who was alone in the room, surrendered after authorities broke a window early Monday and tossed in two tear gas canisters, Bozicevich said.
Neither Wynette nor any member of her crew was associated with the man or the incident, Bozicevich said. The chief said Wynette was staying in a part of the motel that was not evacuated. She was in the Iron Range area of northern Minnesota to perform at Ironworld USA in nearby Chisholm.
The chief said someone reported late Sunday that the man had pointed a gun at someone. No shots were fired, the chief said.
The man from Mayfield, Ky., had more than one gun in his possession when he surrendered, he said.
