Last 5 Cuban Holdouts Leave Spanish Embassy
Five Cubans abandoned the Spanish Embassy on Tuesday, ending a 58-day episode in which more than 50 Cubans sought to emigrate by taking refuge in European embassies.
The last of 18 Cubans who had held out at the Spanish Embassy since July walked out of the heavily guarded building in downtown Old Havana at about 7 p.m. Embassy charge d’affaires Ignacio Ruperez said that Cuban authorities had guaranteed the five that they would not suffer reprisals. The Cubans’ turning to the Spanish Embassy had strained relations between Cuba and Spain.
