JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Bethlehem Steel Corp. said today that it will make $100 million in improvements at its Johnstown production plant if it obtains concessions from the United Steelworkers of America.
Sufficient concessions would allow the company to make major improvements, including a new continuous caster and modernization of an existing bar mill to permit rod production, Bethlehem Chairman Walter Williams said.
The Bar, Rod and Wire Division headquarters plant in Johnstown employs about 2,000 workers, while plants in Lackawanna, N.Y., and Sparrows Point, Md., each employ 350.
The current labor contract, which expires July 31, 1993, calls for modifications to the agreement for plants having financial difficulties.
