German Unity Talks Bog Down
Six-power talks about German unification bogged down Thursday in fine-print disputes over withdrawing Soviet forces and restoring full German sovereignty, sources said.
The delegation sources said the Soviet Union was resisting not only setting a firm date for pulling 370,000 troops out of East Germany but also was renouncing Allied occupation rights on Oct. 3, when the two Germanys are to merge.
Senior officials of East and West Germany and the four World War II Allies--the United States, Soviet Union, France and Britain--were meeting to wrap up the text of an accord to be signed by their foreign ministers in Moscow next week.
The “two-plus-four” conference in East Berlin, which began Tuesday, was originally expected to be completed in two days but it was extended at least until today after hitting snags.
