South African President Frederik W. de Klerk will meet with President Bush in Washington on Sept. 24, the White House announced today.

“The meeting is at the invitation of President Bush and will allow the two leaders an opportunity to discuss the current negotiating process under way in South Africa and ways it may be encouraged,” Bush’s press secretary, Marlin Fitzwater, said in a statement.

De Klerk’s government has been negotiating with the black majority in South Africa to seek a way to allow power-sharing in the strife-ridden nation.

Bush had invited both De Klerk and African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela for separate visits to the White House some time ago.

Mandela met with Bush in June, but De Klerk put off his visit.
