World IN BRIEF : CZECHOSLOVAKIA : 41% Boost in Crime Tied to Democracy

Crime in Czechoslovakia has climbed by 41% this year, and part of the increase has been brought about by the democratic changes that swept the Communists from power, CTK, the government news agency, reported. Speaking to parliamentary deputies, Interior Minister Jan Langos said that offenses have risen substantially because President Vaclav Havel last January granted amnesty to about 20,000 convicts. Authorities said that, shortly afterward, the crime rate rose in some areas of Prague by several hundred percent.
