WORLD : Allies of Slain Doe Fight Rebels
Heavy fighting was reported today in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, where rebels hunted troops loyal to President Samuel Doe, slain in a surprise attack Sunday.
Prince Yormie Johnson’s rebels attacked the main army barracks, Barclay Training Center, and many of Doe’s remaining soldiers either surrendered or stripped off their uniforms and deserted, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.
But some soldiers, probably members of Doe’s Krahn tribe, retreated to the heavily fortified executive mansion, where they put up fierce resistance, the BBC reported.
