Buddhist monks and students threw rocks and fired stones from catapults at soldiers and police during anti-government demonstrations in Mandalay, injuring 11 officers, the government said Tuesday.

Police arrested two monks, but no shots were fired, Col. Than Tun, a member of the ruling military council’s information committee, told a news conference.

Two hundred flag-waving monks and students threw stones at troops in Myanmar’s central city of Mandalay on Monday, he said. Myanmar was formerly known as Burma.
