Gorbachev’s Terms for Gulf Initiative Listed
Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev is willing to discuss Iraq’s grievances with Kuwait if Baghdad’s troops withdraw from the emirate, Italian Foreign Minister Gianni De Michelis said Saturday.
De Michelis told a news conference after talks with Gorbachev that the Soviet leader is prepared to launch an initiative to resolve the crisis, but this would hinge on an Iraqi withdrawal and the restoration of Kuwait’s sovereignty.
“In this context, he believes that if Iraq agrees to this then it would be possible at a diplomatic level to discuss the issues raised by Iraq prior to the invasion,” he said.
