WORLD : Gainsboroughs Taken in London
Art thieves made off with three 18th-Century portraits worth more than $3 million from a London legal college, Scotland Yard said today.
The paintings, worth about $1 million each, were stripped from their frames and taken Sunday from the Great Hall of Lincoln’s Inn, a legal college in central London, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.
The three portraits included two by Thomas Gainsborough and one by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
“We have no suspects so far but are working on several leads,” the spokesman said.
The thieves beat a security guard unconscious during the break-in, the spokesman said.
