BUCHAREST : A Ceausescu in the Dock

His parents were summarily executed and his uncle was sent to prison for 15 years. Now, Nicu, the favored son and once the heir apparent of the late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, is to hear the verdict on charges of genocide against him.
A reported drunkard and philanderer, Nicu Ceausescu was a top local Communist Party official, and given Romanian anger after decades of oppression, the betting is that Ceausescu may face a sentence of life in prison.
The late dictator’s son, Valentin, and daughter, Zoe, also face prosecution charged with lesser crimes against the state, as do other Ceausescu relatives and senior officials of the government and secret police network.
