Porsche AG, never able to match in Indy-car racing the success it achieved in other forms of motor sports, will leave the series at the end of the season.

In a statement issued at its North American headquarters in Reno, the firm said its five-year involvement with Indy cars would end with the Laguna Seca event at Monterey on Oct. 21.

Porsche has won one race since beginning Indy-car competition late in the 1986 season.

Danny Sullivan is leaving the team that helped him win the 1985 Indianapolis 500 and the 1988 CART driving championship, according to a published report.

The Indianapolis News reported Tuesday that Penske Racing plans to switch from its three-driver team of this year back to the two-driver team of previous seasons. Three-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears and 1989 Indy 500 champion Emerson Fittipaldi are teammates of Sullivan this year.

The New Orleans City Council has approved a proposal for car races in the business district.

The Grand Prix du Mardi Gras will be part of the Camel GT race series. The first race is scheduled for June, 1991.

Max Prestwood Jr. has won the 1990 NASCAR Racing Series national championship.

The title for stock car drivers was undecided until all races were completed on the season’s official closing on Sunday.
