U.S. officials said they have halted the importation of 49 French, Italian and Spanish wines containing small amounts of procymidone, a pesticide used in Europe and now undergoing safety review by the Environmental Protection Agency. A preliminary EPA assessment said it did not believe that the pesticide residue posed any significant health risk. The controversy involves 10% to 20% of the $1 billion in wine imported annually, most of it from Europe.
