WORLD IN BRIEF : CANADA : Troops in Europe to Be Cut by 1,400

Canada will reduce its troops in Europe by 1,400 next year, Defense Minister Bill McKnight announced in Ottawa. The cuts will be made at two Canadian bases in West Germany. “These are budget-driven reductions,” McKnight said. He promised there would be no change in Canada’s role in NATO as a result of the cuts. Canada has about 8,000 troops in West Germany.
