Mayor Jacques Chirac said Friday he will call in private companies to clear piles of garbage littering the streets of the French capital as a pay strike by sanitation workers went into its fourth day.

“It’s an emergency, and a question of hygiene,” Chirac said, condemning the walkout as illegal. The city produces 6,000 tons of garbage a day.
