Jack McKeon was fired as general manager by the San Diego Padres on Friday, ending a decade-long stay with the club.

The Padres’ new ownership group, which bought the team from Joan Kroc in June, announced the firing after a day-long meeting.

While stripped of his general manager’s duties, McKeon, 59, apparently will allowed to stay with the club in some capacity. He is under contract through 1991 at $400,000 per year.

The Padres have already begun interviewing candidates for McKeon’s job, and according to Times sources, have interviewed three candidates: Roger Jongewaard, Seattle Mariner vice president/scouting and player development; Dan Duquette, Montreal Expo assistant general manager, and Gordon Ash, Toronto Blue Jay assistant general manager.
