Jean-Marc Besozzi of France and Horst Lotz of West Germany were killed in a multiple-motorcycle crash during the Bol d’Or 24-hour endurance race at Le Castellet, France.

Race officials said Besozzi died instantly in the crash on the Mistral straight, where speeds reach up to 125 m.p.h. They said he was struck by another bike when the engine of his Suzuki seized. Minutes later officials said Lotz, on a Honda, died in the same accident. The report did not make clear who was driving the other bike. Two more riders, France’s Bernard Andre and Jean-Louis Martini were also seriously injured. Two other unidentified riders involved suffered only minor injuries.
