Closing Arguments in Smoker Retrial: Lawyers for the family of the late Nathan H. Horton and their counterparts representing American Tobacco will present final arguments in Oxford, Miss., today. Horton’s family blamed American for his death and sued the tobacco company in 1988 after Horton, a Pall Mall smoker for more than 30 years, died at age 50. The first trial ended in a hung jury when the bitterly divided jurors--split 7-5 in American’s favor--refused to continue deliberating with each other.
