Science / Medicine : Two Views on Heart Attacks

From Times staff and Wire reports

Men are more prone to heart attacks than women but recover more quickly, perhaps because they consider it a positive ailment caused by hard work, according to cardiologists at a conference in Stockholm.

Women, on the other hand, suffer worse heart disease, receive less support from their families and believe they have failed, the scientists said.

“For a man, the myocardial infarction (heart attack) can be seen as a bonus because he has been working so hard,” said Professor Nina Rehnqvist, president of the Swedish cardiology society.

“So it’s a prize he gets because he has been very good at his job. But if a woman gets an infarction it’s a failure,” Rehnqvist said.
