WORLD : Philippine Rebels Scrap Truce
Philippine communist guerrillas today scrapped a cease-fire with President Corazon Aquino’s government and right-wing army rebels warned again that they would overthrow her administration.
The guerrillas accused Aquino of secretly forging a deal with Washington to ensure the continued presence of U.S. military bases in the country and announced they will resume their insurgency on a bigger scale.
The Aquino government initiated a limited truce with the Communist New People’s Army on Sept. 12 in Manila, in the northern city of Baguio and in three provinces damaged by a major earthquake last July.
