LAKE PIRU : $600,000 Grant to Fund Improvements

A $600,000 grant to the United Water Conservation District of Ventura County will be used to improve parking and boat-launching facilities at Lake Piru.

The funds, which were approved recently by the Boating and Waterways Commission, are derived from taxes on gasoline bought by California boaters.

The intermediate launching ramp at the facility will be widened to accommodate two new lanes and a float.

Three ramps are used at the lake, depending on the water level. Floats that rise and fall with the water level are used to get in and out of vessels. The two new ramps will cost about $100,000 and the float about $28,000.

In addition to the improvements at the launch--on the west side of Lake Piru and north of the marina--$380,000 of the grant will be used to pave a parking lot and to resurface another lot.

The project should be completed by next summer, said Frederick Gientke, district general manager.

“We expect about 10,000 boats will be launched from here annually after the improvements, compared to the current 6,000 launchings,” Gientke said.

Lake Piru, about 10 miles northeast of Fillmore, was created in 1955 by construction of the Santa Felicia Dam.
