For garage-sale prowlers and bargain-hunting habitues, this weekend’s Ultimate Rummage Sale at the San Marino Woman’s Club may just live up to its billing.

Even for those stoics who have so far resisted the urge to take a quick peek at sidewalks full of secondhand treasures, the castoffs of a community considered one of the wealthiest in the nation could be worth a look. What other annual event would boast a table full of unwanted chandeliers for sale, as was the case at last year’s San Marino sale?

The annual rummage weekend has become a San Marino tradition, with more than 100 women scouring the community all year for top-quality merchandise, including some new items donated by local businesses, said Mary Jean Lynberg, the club’s Ways and Means chairman.

“We have everything from thimbles to furniture. There are bargains galore,” she said. At past sales, air conditioners, jewelry, toys, linens and furniture have gone to lucky bargain hunters, she said.

“We look through the thrift stores at their prices, and then we try to underprice them,” Lynberg said. “We’ve sold sofas for $75 or $100. But the prices start at 25 cents and go up from there.”

Along with the usual used merchandise, there are always some spectacular white elephants on the sale floor, which stretches across a banquet hall that seats 400 people. Antique clothing, lighting fixtures and unusual gift items are usually available.

The club, which has been around since the mid-1930s, derives much of its operating budget from the annual sale, Lynberg said. The club is a charitable organization whose members donate time and money to schools, libraries and hospitals and finance the San Gabriel Training Center for disabled adults, she said.

The rummage sale will be held at the woman’s club building, 1800 Huntington Drive, San Marino, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
