World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : 6 Killed in Clashes in Black Townships
Six blacks were killed in two clashes in black townships, including three youths who died when gasoline-soaked tires were put around their necks and set ablaze. The three teen-agers were “necklaced” in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, police said. No motive was reported, but rival factions have been fighting in the area. Three blacks were shot dead in Crossroads, outside Cape Town, in a battle between squatters and residents of brick houses. Meanwhile, regional conferences of the African National Congress were held in Cape Town and Johannesburg, the first such ANC conferences in South Africa since 1959.
