Share

Heavy fighting was reported in the Liberian capital of Monrovia after a West African peacekeeping task force, backed by Nigerian warplanes and heavy artillery, opened fire on Charles Taylor’s rebel army in at least two suburban locations, including a key airfield held by the rebels. The task force also began taking up positions around the executive mansion, where about 1,000 soldiers from the army of slain President Samuel K. Doe remain holed up.
