NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Exxon Plans to Sue Coast Guard in Spill

Exxon Corp. said it plans to file a $2-billion lawsuit against the U.S. Coast Guard in connection with the Valdez, Alaska, disaster in which 11 million gallons of oil were spilled. The firm said the suit was intended only to keep its legal options open. Exxon did not offer an explanation for why the Coast Guard should share responsibility for the March 24, 1989, accident in which the Exxon Valdez hit a reef and spilled crude oil.
