Singapore Airlines today said it has signed a contract with Boeing for 30 B747-400 aircraft in a deal valued at $5.5 billion.

It said in a statement that the contract covers a firm order placed in January this year for 15 planes, including a cargo jet, and options for 15 others. Deliveries are scheduled between 1994 and 1998.

Singapore Airlines has on order 20 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 planes worth $3.1 billion.

The statement said the cargo jet ordered will allow the airline to expand its cargo service, which last year accounted for 19% of the airline’s total revenue of $2.8 billion.
