Big Rate Hike for Assigned-Risk Car Insurance

In response to your excellent editorial, “Auto Insurance on a Collision Course” (Sept. 21):

I am an insurance agent and broker who sells auto insurance through paranoid insurance companies. They have lost money on it for years, contrary to the views of some, and have become extremely restrictive about who they insure, requiring all kinds of things designed to hold down claims. There is one slight mistake in your editorial. Uninsured motorist coverage is not a large part of the total auto insurance premium, as stated, although if we get more uninsured drivers, it could become a large part.

Your editorial is right in that we cannot have both rich trial lawyers and low rates. Only no-fault solves this problem by limiting attorney activities and subsequent costs.
