PRETORIA, South Africa —
A small, homemade bomb exploded early today at a rear gate to the U.S. ambassador’s residence, causing minor damage and no injuries, police and an embassy spokesman said.
Ambassador William Swing was home when the explosion occurred at 1 a.m., said Larry Schwartz of the U.S. Information Service. No group claimed responsibility, he said.
“It’s a total surprise,” Schwartz said. “It’s never happened before.”
