Berlin, site of the 1936 Olympics, hopes to stage the games again in the year 2000.

Tino Schwierzina, Berlin’s deputy mayor, said his city was a top contender to hold the Olympics at the turn of the century because it had well-organized sports facilities and an efficient transport system.

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall late last year, East and West Germany had planned to place separate bids for the 2000 Olympics.
