ATHENS : Elections in Greece
Greece’s young, cost-cutting conservative government faces its first test at the polls in nationwide municipal elections Sunday.
Narrowly elected in April over Socialist former Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, supply-side Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis has imposed across-the-board austerity after eight years of Socialist free-spending. The consequences will likely hurt Mitsotakis’ New Democracy conservatives in local races against candidates of the orthodox Greek Communist Party and Papandreou’s party, but they are not expected to affect either Mitsotakis’ policies or his ability to govern.
