An Iraqi opposition group based in London said Friday that Iraq is considering withdrawing from Kuwait and that its ruling political party has circulated a questionnaire asking key members for their opinion.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party-Iraq said President Saddam Hussein might use the survey as a way of justifying a withdrawal from Kuwait.

The Kurdistan party said in a news release received in Nicosia from its London headquarters that the questionnaire was circulated Monday to senior Arab Baath Socialist Party members, cadres and activists.

“This latest move shows building tension and anxiety within the Iraqi leadership over the consequences of its invasion and annexation of Kuwait,” the Kurdistan party said in its statement. “It may well indicate that Saddam Hussein is contemplating a way out of the crisis by consulting party members.”

The purported survey could not be independently confirmed.
