NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : U.S. to Sue Exxon for Spill Damages

A civil suit against Exxon over the company’s Alaska oil spill will be filed when its criminal case against Exxon is resolved, the Justice Department announced in Washington. A spokesman said the department has a “parallel procedure” policy that delays civil litigation until a criminal case against the same defendant is resolved. He said that explained why the government had not sued Exxon for damages 1 1/2 years after the spill.
