Observations on ‘The Civil War’

Share

“The Civil War” was a masterpiece. However, I was amazed at the glorification of Lee. He was not unlike Hitler in that both believed a particular “race” to be subhuman. Lee was quoted as saying he regretted having a military education. Perhaps the blinders of his military bent prevented him from seeing the true evil the military represented.

My mother (born in 1911) named a child Lee, as had every generation of her family since “The War Between the States” (it was never called the Civil War in Arkansas).

Lee chose his loyalty to his state over his loyalty to a higher honor. And for that he ought not be idolized.
