The state has ordered cheap imitations of the Slap Wrap removed from shelves after a 4-year-old cut herself on one of the bracelets.

The Department of Consumer Protection ordered the recall last week of foreign-made versions of the Connecticut-made Slap Wrap after several imitations failed safety tests.

When the 9-inch strip of metal is slapped against the wrist, it wraps itself around the wearer’s arm.

The department tested three versions of the steel bracelets encased in cloth for exposed sharp edges, which are prohibited on most toys under the state’s Child Protection Act.

Only the original Slap Wrap made by Simsbury-based Main Street Toy passed, said Lois Bryant, director of the department’s product safety division.

The bracelets that failed the test were imitations, some of them labeled “Made in Taiwan” and some not labeled at all, Bryant said.

Slap Wraps sell for about $2.50. The imitations cost less, usually 99 cents.
