World IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : 12 Deaths Linked to Geothermal Blast

Twelve people, mostly children, died and about 20 were injured when an explosion ripped through a village near a geothermal power plant in western El Salvador, Red Cross and army officials said. The blast, which officials said was caused by an accumulation of underground gases, wrecked homes in the village of El Barro in Ahuachapan province. “The ground opened and steam came out, throwing hot rocks,” according to a local Red Cross spokesman.
