Restrictions on U.S. Training

When you read how the Saudis are insisting on maintaining their control of the American forces in their country--you can’t help but remember how the Vietnam government became more of a problem in that war than a help. Though the problems are different, it is a dangerous precedent that has cost many lives before.

The American forces have made a very serious commitment--and many would surely have to die to keep it if war breaks out--and no foreign government should be able to just buy that kind of commitment.

If our government were to send those troops into combat without the Saudis allowing them to become familiar with their weapons by live-fire practice, they will be showing a reckless disregard for those troops’ lives and welfare.

If the emirs and sheiks can’t cooperate, then we should have determined that before sending that huge force in there, and maybe just let them fight their own wars.
