Washington is in the driver’s seat on the road to the Rose Bowl, but there is no boasting among the Huskies.

“It keeps getting harder every week,” Mario Bailey said after No. 17 Washington’s 38-17 Pacific 10 Conference victory over No. 19 Oregon Saturday. “You want to say Rose Bowl, but you can’t.”

Mark Brunell ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third, Greg Lewis rushed for 169 yards and Washington’s defense caused Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave to commit three turnovers.

“I felt like we were beaten, and I don’t remember that many times here when we were beaten that way,” 14-year Oregon Coach Rich Brooks said.

Washington, 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10, virtually eliminated Oregon (4-2, 0-2) from the race to Pasadena. The Huskies are the only Pac-10 team without a conference defeat.

“We did not have a good first half, but I was pleased with the second half,” Washington Coach Don James said.

Lewis rushed for more than 100 yards for the sixth time this season, including a 53-yard run for Washington’s first touchdown.

“That hole was so wide open I couldn’t do anything but score,” Lewis said.

Brunell, a sophomore, scored on runs of five and 12 yards and also passed 45 yards to Orlando McKay for a touchdown during a 17-point fourth quarter.

Brunell completed 11 of 22 passes for 193 yards and wasn’t intercepted. Brunell ran 13 times for 56 yards; Bailey made seven catches for 111 yards.

“Some quarterbacks are just running quarterbacks and some quarterbacks are just passing quarterbacks,” Brunell said. “It’s kind of exciting to be able to do both.”

Musgrave, who directed Oregon to a victory over Brigham Young in Eugene two weeks ago, completed 22 of 45 passes for 302 yards. But the Huskies intercepted him twice and recovered a Musgrave fumble to set up two touchdowns. Musgrave was sacked four times.

Musgrave said Washington’s constant pressure didn’t give him much time.

“They brought a lot of people all the time,” he said.

Brooks said the two Oregon turnovers that led to Washington touchdowns were the key.

“I said early this week if we were going to give the ball away, we might as well stay home,” Brooks said.

Washington, which leads the nation in defense against the run, held Oregon to seven yards rushing.

Washington intercepted Musgrave four times in a 20-14 victory over Oregon at Seattle last season and the Huskies intercepted Musgrave twice in the first half for a 14-10 halftime lead.

Eric Briscoe’s interception with 4:53 left in the half gave the Huskies the ball on the Oregon 27. They scored three plays later on Brunell’s five-yard run for a 14-7 lead with 3:54 remaining.

Washington took a 7-0 lead six minutes into the game on Lewis’ 53-yard run up the middle. Oregon tied the score on Musgrave’s one-yard sneak midway through the second quarter.

Gregg McCallum kicked a 46-yard field goal for Oregon with 32 seconds left in the first half, cutting Washington’s lead to 14-10.
