Centennial Rites Honor Eisenhower’s Memory
Dwight D. Eisenhower, born 100 years ago Sunday, was remembered in a celebration as the consummate American who set the nation’s standard of patriotism.
About 1,500 people, including former President Gerald R. Ford, paid tribute to the World War II commander and 34th President of the United States in a ceremony at Gettysburg College, near where Eisenhower retired after his second term ended in 1961.
In Abilene, Kan., Eisenhower’s childhood home, about 30,000 people visited, swelling the town of 6,600 for a centennial tribute.
