Defense Dept. to Clean Hazardous Waste Site
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Monday that the Defense Department has agreed to assume responsibility for cleaning up hazardous waste at a military surplus store in Las Vegas.
The EPA said it was only the second time that the Defense Department has accepted responsibility for hazardous material sold to the public as surplus at military auctions.
The Defense Department has contended that, once sold, such material becomes the responsibility of the buyer and the EPA if a cleanup is needed.
The agreement covers the removal and disposal of 2,000 drums of hazardous material at Buck’s War Surplus in Las Vegas, the EPA said.
