Brazilian Airline Places Large Order for Boeing Planes
The Brazilian airline Varig has placed orders for as many as 26 Boeing jetliners in a deal valued at up to $2.6 billion, Boeing Commercial Airplane group said Tuesday.
The order comes just one day after United Airlines placed the largest commercial aircraft order in history: $22 billion for as many as 128 planes.
The Varig deal includes firm orders for six 747-400s and eight 737-300s, totaling $1.3 billion, Boeing said. It includes options for five 747-400s and seven 737-300s.
It is the largest order ever placed by a Latin American carrier.
In February, Varig confirmed orders for 15 Boeing 737-300s valued at $450 million.
The 747-400 is the world’s largest commercial aircraft, seating 412. It can fly 8,400 miles nonstop.
The 737-300, which seats 128, can fly close to 3,000 miles nonstop.
The announcement brings total orders of the 747-400 to 385 and for all 737 models to 2,842. Boeing’s orders for 1990, including United’s on Monday, stand at 413 planes valued at $38.7 billion.
