WORLD : Lebanon Freezes Aoun’s Funds
The government of President Elias Hrawi today froze $30 million allegedly embezzled by Christian Gen. Michel Aoun, the former rebel army leader now holed up in the French Embassy.
Official sources said the government instructed several local banks to freeze money deposited in Aoun’s accounts during the two years in which he claimed to be the legitimate Lebanese prime minister.
The sources said Hrawi’s government is also attempting to freeze a reported $60 million deposited in banks abroad, notably French banks.
Aoun’s mutiny ended Saturday when he was routed by Lebanese and Syrian troops that moved into Christian East Beirut and captured the presidential palace in Baabda.
