Chargers Aren’t Schizo, They Just Played Like One in New York

Share

In case you’ve been wondering . . .

Did the Chargers send the same players to New York that they sent to Pittsburgh?

The difference was that the Chargers did some soul-searching after the Pittsburgh debacle, and decided they believed in what they were doing and wanted it real bad and then came to play in New York. That’s it. Simple. That was the post-game rhetoric.

They must have taken empty souls to Pittsburgh, where they couldn’t have believed in what they were trying to do, didn’t want to do it and, thus, did not come to play.

Which Chargers will show up Sunday?

With only one starter returning, doesn’t it figure to be a long season for San Diego State basketball?

Wait a minute. Last year’s team had 13 wins and 18 losses. It was awful, as all Aztec basketball teams have been of late.

Why would you want more than one starter returning?

All the new guys have to do is improve on awful.

Is Eric Show’s career over?

His Padre career is, but not his career. Don’t be surprised if there comes a time when Padre fans are sitting around, complaining about how stupid it was to let him go and get nothing in return.

What is happening with the San Diego Marathon?

It looks like it is as dead as I would be at the end of running 26 miles. Communities and organizers cannot seem to get on the same page in terms of courses.

The latest course would run from UCSD to Oceanside, which seemed a splendid idea. The problem was with communities such as Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas, which would get no name recognition in exchange for having their main drag tied up on a Sunday morning.

And it’s too late, with the race scheduled for Dec. 9, to organize the logistics of a course through the city of San Diego. It’s too late, indeed, for the runners themselves to get ready for such an uncertain undertaking.

It’s amazing that America’s Finest City cannot handle what has become routine in Boston and New York.

Why don’t the Chargers make better use of Rod Bernstine and Ronnie Harmon?

As I see it, that’s not the question. Instead, I wonder why a team so heavy in running backs and thin in wide receivers insists on the one-running back-offensive set.

Isn’t there a coaching axiom about fitting the scheme to the players rather than the other way around?

What’s going on with SDSU football?

Glad you asked. Nothing. It has byes the next two Saturdays.

As in . . .

Bye-bye.

Is this the year USD makes another run at the West Coast Conference basketball title?

You bet. Hank Egan won’t want to hear it, but the Toreros figure to be favored in the WCC.

And SDSU probably won’t want to hear it, but USD’s program is what SDSU should be aspiring to become. It is a successful program built on solid young men who don’t seem to disappear so frequently for reasons such as academic deficiencies.

Speaking of basketball, what is the Jack in the Box San Diego Collegiate Basketball Championship?

It might better be described as artificial hype for a doubleheader featuring the men’s and women’s teams of SDSU and USD at the Sports Arena Nov. 27. I can’t right offhand think of any championship at stake.

Since three bands will play in the aftermath, it might more accurately be called Two Nonconference Basketball Games and The Battle of the No-Name Bands.

Are the Sockers ready to start the season?

It looks that way. The front office and the coach cannot seem to agree on the roster makeup. Either that, or they cannot seem to agree on whether or not they agree.

It would actually be to the Sockers’ advantage if the powers that be simply disagree on whether they disagree, because this franchise has always been at its best when bickering.

Consider that the Sockers have bickered their way to eight championships in the last nine years and you wonder why anyone involved would even want to think about getting along.
